Friday Five 9/7/2012

Posted on September 7, 2012 by Chris O'Connell in Friday Five, Security Basics 101 - No Comments

Greetings and welcome back to the Friday Five, ELITE’s weekly collection of the five most relevant and interesting security related news tidbits!  Let’s get to it.

2012 Norton Cybercrime report, a worrying scenario
Norton releases their annual report on cyber criminal activities, and the results are scary!  In the past 12 months 556 million adults have experienced cyber crime.  This number is equal to 46% of all online adults.  The price tag?  $110 BILLION.  The author of this article doesn’t seem to be a native English speaker, so some of the grammar is a bit off, but the message is right on target!

Sony Allegedly Hacked By NullCrew
If true Sony should be truly embarrassed.  Back in 2011 Sony suffered a massive security breach exposing up to 77 million members of the PlayStation Network’s credit card data.  Sony took the PlayStation network offline to plug the security holes, but were hacked again shortly after the service was brought back online.  Almost a year later we see yet another report that a Sony service was compromised… not so good.  Big companies need to do a better job protecting consumer information.

Another layer of security for your Dropbox account
Dropbox is no stranger to security problems.  In fact, the product has been so insecure that ELITE wrote this review of the service:  http://elitesecurityauditors.com/2012/08/as-the-name-indicates-team-dropbox-is-not-for-corporations/

Dropbox has finally added an awesome security feature, which we at ELITE also wrote about: http://elitesecurityauditors.com/2012/08/2-factor-authentication-why-you-need-it/. 2 factor authentication has been around for a while now, but we’re glad to see Dropbox adopt the technology.  Now, hopefully the users of Dropbox will use this important security function.

ISC StormCast for Thursday, September 6th 2012
A bit technical, but the daily StormCast goes over breaking stories on security.  This podcast is only about 5 minutes each day, and is a great way to keep up to date with information security stories.

Patch Tuesday
OK, a little bit of self promotion here… ELITE wrote a Security 101 entry about Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday this week.  You’ll find the link discussing how and why Patch Tuesday is so important here:

So that’s it for this week folks.  We at ELITE would love to see some comments and retweets, so please spread this article around!
